BREAKING NEWS: Hundreds of Gambella Students Reportedly Denied University Registration After Insecurity Disrupts TraveHundreds of students from Gambella Region are reportedly facing disruption to their university education after arriving late at Ethiopian universities because of insecurity and transport difficulties linked to the deadly September 18 vehicle attack in the region. Students who were unable to reach their campuses on time are now reportedly being denied registration, raising concerns about the educational consequences of continued insecurity for young people from affected communities.
The students’ difficulties began as insecurity disrupted movement along the Itang-Abol-Gambella road, a key route connecting Gambella City with communities in the Nuer Zone. Following the September 18 attack on vehicles in the region, access along the road became difficult, leaving large numbers of students stranded in the Nuer Zone and preventing them from travelling to their respective universities as scheduled.
With university registration deadlines approaching or passing, the disruption has reportedly left many students unable to complete the registration process within the required period. Information received by Gambella Vision indicates that hundreds of students have been affected, with some now facing denial of registration because of delays associated with circumstances beyond their immediate control.
The situation has placed affected students in a difficult position: despite their intention to continue their education, insecurity and restricted access to transportation have reportedly prevented them from reaching their institutions on time. For those denied registration, the consequences could extend beyond a delayed journey, potentially jeopardizing an entire academic year if no arrangements are made to accommodate their circumstances.
The case also highlights the wider impact of insecurity on education in Gambella. While the September 18 attack raised immediate concerns about civilian safety and road access, the resulting travel disruptions appear to have created additional difficulties for students preparing to begin or continue university studies. The reported registration denials now raise questions about how universities are handling students whose late arrival was linked to security-related transport disruptions.
It remains unclear how many students have been formally denied registration, which universities are affected, or whether the institutions have introduced exceptional arrangements for students unable to arrive on time. Gambella Vision has not yet obtained official responses from the affected universities or relevant education authorities regarding the reported cases.
The affected students’ situation underscores the need to establish the scale of the registration problem and clarify whether alternative arrangements are available to prevent students from losing an academic year because of the disruption.
