Many Nuer politicians speak about leadership, representation, and political advancement, yet few publicly address the persistent violence affecting Nuer communities in Gambella or propose concrete solutions to end it.
Only six days after the recent general election, reports indicate that several Nuer individuals have lost their lives, while many others have been injured in violent incidents. Additional reports suggest that another person was shot today, although the individual’s condition remains unclear.
For many Nuer citizens, the concerns surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gambella are straightforward. The violence has damaged the region’s image, caused suffering among communities, and undermined public confidence in security institutions. Addressing these challenges does not require extraordinary expertise; it requires political will, accountability, and effective leadership.
The Nuer Public express serious concern on those representing them in Gambella Parliament that Nuer politicians have not done enough to expose their Anyuak counterpart responsible for violence or to push for stronger action against criminal networks operating in the region.
Concerns have also been raised about weaknesses in law enforcement and the implementation of state laws intended to protect citizens. The Anyuak Elite governing the state have watered down those laws and the Nuer Politicians working with them remain numb.
Those responsible for attacks against civilians should be identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the Ethiopian Constitution and the rule of law. Any candidate seeking a senior leadership position at the regional or national level should work closely with local communities and the federal government to develop practical measures that improve security and bring perpetrators to justice. But that is yet to be seen.
Without stronger leadership and a clear commitment to tackling violence, many fear that Gambella will struggle to achieve lasting stability. Continued insecurity risks claiming more lives and deepening divisions among communities would be a daily norm as indeed three Nuer were killed today and another one shot today whose fate is not yet known..
Possible measures could include strengthening security operations in violence-prone areas, disrupting criminal networks, improving intelligence gathering, protecting witnesses, and encouraging community cooperation through appropriate incentives and safeguards.
The Gambella Regional Parliament could also consider legislation that strengthens penalties for ethnically motivated violence and improves the administration of justice. Regional authorities may benefit from closer cooperation with federal institutions and neighboring regions to ensure that serious crimes are investigated and prosecuted effectively.
Future leaders of Gambella—whether Nuer, Anyuak, Mejeng, or from any other community—should place peace, security, and justice at the center of their political agenda. Without such commitment, cycles of retaliation and violence may continue to undermine the region’s development and social cohesion.
At present, many residents feel that these issues are not receiving the attention they deserve. Political leaders who genuinely wish to see a peaceful and prosperous Gambella should make the protection of all communities a core part of their leadership vision.
While it is understandable that individuals who speak openly about accountability and reform may face political challenges, silence does little to address the suffering caused by violence. Lasting peace will require courage, honest dialogue, accountability, and leadership that places the interests of all communities above political considerations.
A peaceful future for Gambella depends on a shared commitment to justice, security, and reconciliation for all its people.
