Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) says its teams at Kule Health Centre in #Gambella have been responding to a large influx of wounded patients following violence in Itang Special Woreda on September 18, providing new details on the human impact of the incident.
According to MSF, the health centre received 88 patients affected by the violence. The medical organisation said eight people were already deceased when they arrived at the facility, while four others died upon arrival despite the efforts of medical teams, bringing the deaths recorded among those brought to Kule Health Centre to 12.
The remaining patients were treated for injuries ranging from serious to minor. MSF said the scale of the casualties placed significant demands on the medical response at Kule. Thirteen patients were referred to hospitals in Gambella for additional medical care and further treatment, while other injured patients continued receiving care at the health centre.
“Our priority is to provide urgent medical care to everyone who needs it, based solely on medical need and regardless of their identity or background,” said #Gul_Badshah, MSF Operations Manager for Ethiopia, based in #Nairobi, according to the organisation’s statement.
Badshah also called on those involved in the violence to exercise restraint and protect civilians from further violence. The statement comes as concerns continue over the impact of armed violence on civilians and access to essential services in parts of Gambella.
The figures released by MSF provide one of the clearest accounts so far of the medical consequences of the September 18 violence in Itang Special Woreda, although they represent patients received at Kule Health Centre and should not be interpreted as a comprehensive overall casualty figure for the incident.
