Yesterday, Gambella Regional State President Alemitu Omod made a sudden and unilateral decision to remove Dr. Simon Mun Wal from his position as
Commissioner of the Gambella Sports Commission.
The decision, according to multiple sources, was taken without consultation or prior notice to other senior regional leaders.
What has raised even more concern is that key officials, including Regional Vice President Gatluak Ruon and the head of the Prosperity Party’s Gambella branch, Ashine Astin, were reportedly unaware of the move before it was announced.
In any functioning administration, major decisions, especially those involving high-level appointments are expected to follow consultation, discussion, and legal procedures.
When such steps are ignored, it sends a troubling message about how power is being exercised.
So far, there has been no detailed public explanation outlining the reasons behind Dr. Simon Mun Wal’s dismissal. Was it related to performance concerns? Policy disagreements? Internal political tensions?
The absence of clear communication has only fueled speculation among citizens and political observers.
Activists and community members are now questioning whether the decision aligns with the regional constitution, which is meant to limit absolute authority and promote collective leadership.
If constitutional procedures were bypassed, this incident could deepen concerns about transparency, accountability, and respect for institutional processes in Gambella.
