Clashes along the Nile River in South Sudan have hindered humanitarian aid from reaching over 60,000

Aid Blocked for South Sudan Malnourished children

malnourished children in the northeast for nearly a month, as reported by the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF.

The agencies issued a joint statement on Tuesday, highlighting that nutrition supplies for Upper Nile State, which has some of the highest malnutrition rates in the country, are expected to run out by the end of May.

Mary-Ellen McGroarty, WFP’s representative in South Sudan, emphasized that children are often the first to suffer in emergencies and warned of escalating malnutrition in an already critical region without access to essential supplies.

UNICEF representative Obia Achieng mentioned that the agencies have had to “reluctantly” withhold aid, citing concerns that ongoing violence and disruptions along the river route would prevent supplies from reaching those in dire need.
