At least five people, including two women, were killed in Makhot within a 24-hour period as violence escalated in Ethiopia’s Gambella Region, according to local reports.
The latest incident is part of a sustained attacks on Nuer that have heightened tensions between members of the Nuer and Anyuak communities in the region. Witness accounts allege that armed assailants targeted civilians in multiple locations over recent days.
On Monday, 6th of April, one Nuer youth was reportedly shot dead in Banupdak while tending cattle near a water point. On the following day, two women were killed in a nearby forest while searching for dry woods to use for fuel. Violence intensified when gunmen entered a village during mourning and burial preparations, opening fire on residents.
Two more people were killed and several others sustained injuries, some described as serious. In a separate incident, a passenger bus traveling between Tharpam and Abol came under attack, leaving three teachers dead and seven others injured.
The recent killings bring the reported death toll in Gambella to at least eight within a week. This figure includes three teachers who were previously killed in a minibus attack in the region. Local sources have expressed concern over what they describe as a lack of response from regional authorities.
As of now, there have been no confirmed arrests, and it remains unclear whether a formal investigation has been launched.
The situation in Gambella remains tense, with fears of further violence if security measures are not strengthened.
