Betrayal and Rising Violence.
The Itang Special District Chief Administrator, Ato Oman Olay, has officially resigned from his position and today handed over leadership to the newly appointed chief administrator, Ato Omod Uger
In his resignation statement, Ato Oman explained that his decision came from a deep sense of betrayal by the regional leadership. He openly accused senior regional officials, including H.E. Alemitu Omod, the president of the region, along with several Anyuak politicians, of pursuing policies that have contributed to the targeted killing of Nuer civilians in Itang District and across the region.
According to Oman, the worsening security situation is now being used to blame and discredit him, even though he believes the violence is the result of broader political failures beyond his control.
“Countless lives have been lost while I was in office,” he said. “I cannot continue to lead this district while innocent people keep dying. I refuse to preside over more bloodshed.”
In the resignation letter he submitted two days earlier, Ato Oman made it clear that he intends to withdraw from public office and return to private life. He stated that he no longer wishes to be associated with what he described as a systematic campaign of violence against the Nuer community, calling it morally unacceptable and completely against his conscience.
He concluded by saying that such actions do not represent the values he stands for and that remaining in office would make him complicit in a process he strongly opposes.
With his departure, the responsibility of leading the district now falls to Mr. Omod Uger, as the community watches closely for steps toward stability, justice, and peace in the troubled region.
