In Gambella’s western Ethiopia, armed men of an Anywaa militant group launched an attack on Jewi

Jewi Refugee Camp

Refugee Camp roughly 20 minutes ago, sending thousands of refugees into fear and confusion. The camp, which shelters a large population of people from the Nuer community who fled violence in neighbouring countries, suddenly became the scene of gunfire and chaos.

According to eyewitness accounts, the sound of shooting spread quickly across different sections of the camp, forcing families to run in all directions in search of safety. Some residents reportedly hid inside shelters, while others fled toward nearby areas, unsure where the danger was coming from. Parents were separated from children in the rush, and many people are still unaccounted for as the situation remains unclear.

At the time of this report, there is no confirmed information about the number of casualties or the extent of property damage. However, local sources say injuries are likely, given the intensity of the attack and the population density inside the camp.

Residents say they saw armed personnel heading toward the camp shortly after the attack began. Still, fear remains high among refugees, many of whom already live with trauma from past conflicts and displacement.

The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of refugee populations in the region. Camps like Jewi are meant to provide protection for vulnerable civilians, often under the support of humanitarian agencies such as UNHCR and partner organizations.

Any violence inside or around these camps threatens not only lives but also the fragile sense of security that displaced families depend on.

This latest incident also appears to be part of a broader pattern of escalating tensions. Just one day earlier, an Anywaa militants have attacked Nuer communities in two separate locations, Puldeng and Makot. In Puldeng, two people were killed, and several others suffered serious injuries, including broken bones.

In Makot, at least three individuals were left severely wounded. Community members say these back-to-back incidents are increasing fear of further retaliation and prolonged instability.

Observers warn that if immediate steps are not taken to de-escalate tensions, the situation could deteriorate further, affecting both refugees and host communities across the region. Local leaders are calling for calm, while humanitarian actors emphasize the urgent need for civilian protection and conflict prevention measures.

For now, uncertainty continues to hang over the camp as residents wait for confirmation about casualties, security conditions, and whether the violence has fully stopped.

More updates are expected as additional information becomes available.
