The Ethiopian Ministry of Trade (MoT) has announced a significant increase in fuel prices effective May
13, with gasoline now priced at 123.53 birr per liter and diesel/kerosene at 117.49 birr. This marks the third substantial hike in 2025, following increases in March (diesel at 112.67 birr) and January (gasoil at 101.47 birr).
Despite government assurances of ongoing fuel subsidies of 28 birr per liter, widespread shortages persist, driving black-market prices as high as 300 birr per liter in regions like Gambella, Afar and Benishangul^Gumuz. Reports from reporter indicate severe supply issues across Oromia, Amhara, and Sidama, with major cities such as Adama, Bahir Dar, and Hawassa implementing quota systems or facing significant disruptions.
The economic impact of rising prices and fuel scarcity is being felt by low- and fixed-income households throughout the country.
